# How players use the map

> Every control in the map, from opening it to setting a destination.

This page describes the map from the player's side. Share it with your players, or use it to check
what the defaults do before changing them.

## Outcome

A player can open the map, move around it, find a place, and set a destination they can follow.

## Prerequisites

* The map installed and running. See [Install the map](/products/map/installation).
* The player alive, loaded in, and not in the pause menu. The map does not open otherwise.

## Steps

### 1. Open the map

Press the toggle key. It is `ESCAPE` by default, and each player can rebind it in the FiveM
key-mapping menu under **Toggle 3D Map**.

The camera lifts from the player's position to a high altitude over about a second, then looks
straight down. While the map is open, the normal game controls and the radar are hidden.

The key opens the map. Close it from the **Exit** tab or with **Escape**; the interface and the
markers disappear at once and the camera returns to where it was.

### 2. Move around

| Action | Control |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------- |
| Move the camera | Hold the left mouse button and drag |
| Zoom in and out | Mouse wheel |

Both scale with altitude: the higher the camera, the further one drag or one scroll step moves it.
Movement carries a little momentum and settles on its own after you let go.

The camera is kept inside the world and above the ground, so it cannot be pushed under terrain or
outside the map. A marker placed outside the usual area extends the reachable area, so every marker
stays reachable no matter where it is.

### 3. Read what is on screen

* **The legend** lists what is currently in view, grouped by type, with a count per group. Hovering
an entry moves the camera onto that marker as a preview; clicking it centres on the marker and
  zooms in.
* **The location readout** shows the street and area under the centre of the camera. Over open sea
east of the map it reads "Oceana".
* **The scale bar** shows the distance one screen length covers, in the unit set in the player's own
  game settings.
* **The player card** shows the player's name, server id and character portrait.

The panels can be turned off individually by the server owner. See
[Interface](/products/map/configuration/hud).

### 4. Select a marker

Move the cursor over a marker and it grows slightly, so it is clear which one is under the pointer.
The hover area is a fixed ground distance, and it never covers more than a small part of the screen,
so the same markers light up at every zoom.

| Action | Result |
| ------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Click a marker | The camera moves to it and zooms in |
| Bring a marker to the centre of the screen | Once the camera stops, it settles onto the marker so it sits exactly in the centre |

The second behaviour is the camera's magnet. It only acts when the camera has come to rest, so it
never fights a player who is still dragging. It can be turned off by the server owner. See
[Camera](/products/map/configuration/camera).

### 5. Set a destination

| Action | Result |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Right-click anywhere | Sets a destination there |
| Right-click a marker | Sets a destination at that marker |
| Double-click empty ground | Sets a destination there |
| Double-click a marker | Sets a destination at that marker |
| Double-click empty ground while a destination exists | Clears the destination |

The route is drawn across the map as it is generated, and it follows the player as they move. The
destination is the game's own, so it stays in place after the map is closed.

### 6. Place a point of interest

Points of interest are personal markers, placed at the centre of the camera. The key is shown in the
prompt at the bottom of the screen.

* Press it to place a marker at the point the camera is over.
* Press it again close to an existing one to remove that one instead. How close depends on altitude:
higher up, a larger area counts as "close".
* Placing more than the allowed number removes the oldest one automatically. The default limit is
  ten.

Points of interest last as long as the session and are not saved.

### 7. Switch blip detail

The map shows every marker its resources create. Press the blip-detail button (the gamepad's
right-stick click by default, shown in the prompt at the bottom of the screen) and the markers a
resource marked as low detail are hidden from the map, the legend and the cursor, leaving the
important ones. Press it again to bring them back. The server owner can change the button.

### 8. Use the tabs

Along the interface are tabs for the map itself, the game settings, and exit. Choosing settings
opens the game's own settings screen over the map, blurs the map behind it and gives the cursor back
to it; leaving settings
returns to the map. Exit closes the map, and closes settings first if they are open. **Escape** does
the same as the Exit tab, except while the settings screen is open: there it is the game's own key
for stepping back, and leaving the screen returns to the map.

A server may add its own tabs. Those are provided by other resources, not by the map.

## Verification

Open the map, drag to a different part of the city, right-click a street, and close the map. The
destination is on the radar and the route is being followed.

## Next steps

* [Controls](/products/map/configuration/controls): change the key, the drag and zoom feel, and the
  double-click window.
* [Camera](/products/map/configuration/camera): change the altitude the map opens at and how it
  moves.
* [Markers](/products/map/configuration/blips): change how markers and points of interest look.
