# Settings screen

> Control the sounds of the settings screen the menu opens over the map.

`configs/settings.jsonc` holds what belongs to the **Settings** tab alone. The settings themselves
are the game's own, changed the way the pause menu changes them, so there is nothing here about which
settings exist or what they do. The blur behind the screen is shared with pages and set in
[Menu](https://docs.elementlabs.net/products/3d-pause-menu/configuration/menu.md).

How a configuration file is read and merged is described once, in [How configuration works](https://docs.elementlabs.net/configure/files.md).

## Settings

| Key | Default | Meaning |
| - | - | - |
| `sounds` | `true` | Whether the screen plays the pause menu's sounds as the player moves, changes a value, selects and goes back. |

The game's own menu sounds are silent while the screen is open, so the screen plays recordings of
them instead. They follow each player's own **SFX volume** in the game's audio settings, and are
silent at zero, the same as the game's.

## Example

A settings screen without sound:

```jsonc theme={null}
{
  "namespace": "settings",
  "configVersion": 1,
  "scope": "client",
  "values": {
    "sounds": false
  }
}
```

## Applying changes

```text theme={null}
restart element_3d_pausemenu
```

## Limits

`sounds` accepts `true` or `false`. Any other value is used as written: anything but `false` keeps
the sounds on.
