# Licensing

> What a product licence covers, how downloads are bound to your account, and which files you own.

Element Labs products are distributed through the CFX portal. A purchase is bound to the account
that made it, and that account is what grants your server access to the release you downloaded.

## What a licence covers

A licence covers running the product on the servers associated with your account.

It does not cover:

* redistributing the product, in whole or in part;
* distributing modified copies of the protected files;
* using the product on servers outside your account.

## What you can change

The product is delivered as a mix of protected release output and files intended for you to edit.

| You may edit | You may not edit |
| ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| The settings in `configs`           | The product's protected files  |
| The text and languages in `locales` | The interface and world assets |

[What is inside a product resource](/concepts/resources) shows which directory is which.

Your edits are not preserved by an update: a release replaces the whole resource directory. Keep
your own copies and restore them. The procedure is in [Update a product or the
SDK](/getting-started/updating).

## Support and your licence

Support covers the product running as delivered, with the configuration and language files you own.
When you contact support, include the product and SDK versions so the release in question is not in
doubt. See [Getting help](/support/contact).
